The Cougar Mountain Zoo and Zoological Society of Washington are dedicated to increasing the understanding and appreciation of the earth’s wildlife and the role of humanity in nature through education, research, captive breeding, conservation, exhibition and recreation. The physical appearance of Hyacinthine Macaws may slightly vary depending on geographic area. Hyacinthine Macaws are a deep, rich shade of cobalt blue with prominent areas of bare yellow skin surrounding the eyes and the base of the lower mandible. They have a line of yellow on the otherwise black tongue. The Hyacinthine is the largest of all macaws. They differ from Ara macaws in lacking bare cheeks, instead having a semicircular area of bare yellow skin at the side of the lower mandible. Anodorhynchus means beak without tooth, because, unlike other macaws, the interior surface of the upper mandible lacks notches or ridges. Physical appearance of the Green Winged Macaw may slightly vary depending on geographic area. Regardless of size, all macaws are characterized by strong beaks, long pointed tails, loud voices, and a facial area of bare skin called the cheek patch. The cheek patch in the Green Winged Macaw is adorned with lines of single red feathers in a stitchery like pattern. Their head and body are red. Wings are blue and green.
