Portrait of a shepherd with his reindeer. Warmer temperatures mean the Sami are unable to find food for their reindeer. In the last month of January, temperatures were up to 10 degrees above what is normal in the north of the country. To find enough food, you have to explore new places - often unknown - to drive the herd from summer pastures to winter patches. In their wake they encounter new challenges: roads, wind farms and other hydroelectric projects. The Sami domesticate reindeer in the north for their meat, skin and antlers, but there are also some that live in the wild. The disappearance of the reindeer endangers their modus vivendi. The Sami have been herding reindeer in Lapland for hundreds of years, but the traditions of their ancestors have changed and are becoming increasingly difficult to preserve. The transhumance of reindeer from the mountains to the plains faces climate change, which alternates between cold and temperate periods, freezing the ground and preventing the reindeer from accessing lichen, their main source of food in winter. To feed them, they need to add fodder and this is expensive and unaffordable for them.
