Photo composite of human egg (oocyte) and sperm (spermatozoon), scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The human egg cell (or ovum) is the female reproductive cell (gamete) in human reproduction. The egg cell is not capable of active movement and it is much larger (visible to the naked eye) than the motile sperm cells. A spermatozoon (motile male sperm) joins an ovum (female egg) to form a zygote. A zygote is a single cell, with a complete set of chromosomes, that normally develops into an embryo. Sperm cells contribute approximately half of the nuclear genetic information to the diploid offspring (excluding mitochondrial DNA). Magnification: egg x260, sperm x560 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
