In 1807, Dumitrache Ghica buyes from Ianache Mavrodin an estate of 1,500 hectares around Bucharest. Following the example of his older brother, Grigore D. Ghica, who built in 1822 a palace on the shore of Tei Lake, Alexandru Ghica built a summer residence at Caciulati, between the village Caldarusani and Balotesti. The driveway to the palace is surrounded by secular limes, the building being situated in the middle of a park lying on 15 hectares. The palace was built between 1830 - 1834 and has sober facades and simple decorations. The access in the palace is made by two separated stone staircases which meet to form a terrace. The main hall is high, with 16 marble columns grouped four each. As soon as you enter the ground floor lobby, near the two windows left and right of the entrance stairs climb to the second floor. The palace was repaired and strengthened in 1924. In 1948 it was donated to the Romanian Academy in whose administration is until today. The Venetian mirrors, furniture, paintings, old manuscripts are gone, the palace being left only with its shadows and memories of another time.
