There are abrupt highlands in the eastern elbow of the of this elbow much of the land consists of salt marshes extend-ing along the coast to Great Kills. Along the shores of Arthur Killthere are salt marshes extending from Newark bay to Rossville. The gravel and sand hills of Staten Island are like those of theboroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. They have ]jeen formed in thesame Glacier bringing down Sand, Gravel, Loose Rocks,AND Bowlders Note for the Teacher : The Hudson river, emptying into the harbor of New York(formerly an inland lake), passed out to sea through The Narrows, which now separatesLong Island and Staten Island. The ocean level has risen, and now the tides move upwardinto the harbor of the city and through the East river and the Harlem river. Explain brieflyhow the seacoast is sinking, and how coast lines undergo change. Ask the children living nearour coast line to tell you something about the tides.
