We are about to make a perilous turn,where there is but room for the unencumberedhorses; so, bridles in hand, we lead them, pass thisdanger spot, and find ourselves out of TopocobyaCanyon upon a sliding, dangerous shelf in Rattle- THE GRAND CANYON 265 snake Canyon. The sandstone ledge upon whichwe now walk is two hundred feet or more abovethe bed of the stream. The surface of the ledgeis rounded off and slopes rapidly towards theprecipice edge. A slip or a stumble and a man.
