This consists of a switch or siding track therails of which are always covered with a layer of sand. Theswitch point at the entrance to this sanded track is alwaysopen to the main line, so that should a car get beyond thecontrol of the motorman it would necessarily take the switchand run into the sanded track, thereby coming to a stop made to demonstrate the efliciency of the arrangement instopping runaway cars. The sand track on which the testswere made is located on a 7 per cent grade and the approachto the sand track for a distance of 1500 ft. is also on a 7 percent grade.
