He was regarded as rather too inde-pendent, however, and did not get the position. Inthe Republican Convention of 1884, Mr. Rooseveltfavored the nomination of Senator Edmunds for thePresidency, but when Blaine obtained the nominationhe entered actively into the campaign for the nomi-nee of his party.
