Was born in New York City, Oct. 27, 1858, the sonof Theodore Roosevelt, merchant and was graduated from Harvard Universit}^ in 1880^and after a visit to Europe, he began the stud} of lawin the ofEce of his uncle, Robert B. In thethird legislature to which he was chosen the Repub-licans had a majority, and he was candidate for thespeakership. He was regarded as rather too inde-pendent, however, and did not get the position. Inthe Republican Convention of 1884, Mr. Rooseveltfavored the nomination of Senator Edmunds for thePresidency, but when Blaine obtained the nominationhe entered actively into the campaign for the nomi-nee of his party.
