We know that it is thelower ligaments that are the truevocal chords, because the partsabove these, even the upper liga-ments, may be all cut away, and yeta vocal sound may be produced ;while if an opening be made intothe larynx below the lower liga-ments the voice will be , a French physiologist,speaks of a man, who on account ofan opening in the larynx was neverable to speak without pressing hiscravat tightly against this opening, in order to prevent the air from escaping through it. Manyexperiments have been tried with the larynx after death toverify the results above stated. The lower ligaments are thenthe vocal chords, by the vibration of which all the differentnotes of
