The best way to check this fronl)le would be to hand-clean the palms first, using either a wad of cheesecloth or a sponge to rub off the insects from both sides of tlie leaves and also from the stems; then give the plants a dip in a solution consisting of three-fourths ounce of whale-oil soa]> and one ounce of some good nicotine j)reparation to one pail of water. If the cleaning is thoroughly done and the dipping re- I)eated at intervals of one month, the scale mav be controlled. "W. H. T.
