Netherlands: 'Lucca Madonna'. Oil on wood painting by Jan van Eyck (c. 1390-1441), c. 1430 Jan van Eyck was a Flemish painter primarily active in Bruges, one of the early innovators of what would become known as Early Netherlandish painting. A major representative of Early Northern Renaissance art, he worked in the courts of multiple rulers and nobles, such as Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Highly regarded by Philip, Jan often travelled in his name during diplomatic visits. Around 20 paintings are confidently attributed to him.
