The new bridge,which was practically completed during thepresent year, is a double-track structure,designed to permit the operation of theheaviest power between Philadelphia andBaltimore, and to eliminate single-trackoperation, in order to meet the large in-crease in the volume of traffic. The original bridge, built in 1886, wasa single-track structure suitable for the typeof locomotives in service at that time, butinadequate to meet the requirements of themodern type of engine.
