Slough Bus Station, Slough, United Kingdom. Architect: Bblur, 2011. Detail of aluminium shingle cladding with rooflight.

The scheme consists of a sculptural 70m canopy, running alongside a new north- south pedestrian street. It is anchored at its northern end by a 650m2 accommodation building facing onto the existing railway station. On the ground floor a public cafe/waiting room, newsagent, and operational facilities contribute to a lively street bus bays are located under the canopy. Weather protection and seating for waiting passengers is provided by a glazed zig-zag screen which separates pedestrians from the bus movement area. An innovative fully automatic sliding door system provides safe access to the busses only when a bus is waiting in a bay. The building is clad in aluminium shingles creating a softly textured metallic surface which changes character with varying light conditions. Ground source heat pumps form part of an energy strategy that achieves a BREEAM Very Good Rating.
