Brigadier-General Boss,with one hundred and eighty men, proceeded,on January 4th, to Kotah Lama, a village onthe Perak Biver, and disarmed the inhabitantswithout opposition. Accompanied by a smallparty, the general afterward again landed, andwas surprised by the enemy in an ambuscadein the jungle. The Malays, after a harmlessvolley, rushed out upon the British force withtheir spears. Major H. L. Hawkins and threemen were killed, and Surgeon Townsend andtwo men wounded. The village, with its storesof rice, was subsequently burned. SeveralMalays were killed. This village had alwayshad a bad reputation. The abode of robbers. GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS ANT) OCHTEBXONT MONUMENT, CALCUTTA and escaped prisoners, its name had alwaysbeen a terror to the neighboring districts, anda disgrace to the Bandahara of Perak, whopossessed authority to control the inhabitantsof this village.
