The splendid, historic, 14th century “L'Horloge” on the Ile de la Cité, was the first public clock in Paris. Newly restored in 2012. France.
Located on the wall of the bell tower at the corner of the Palais de Justice and the Conciergerie, L’Horloge on the Ile de la Cité was the first public clock in Paris and dates back to the 14th century. In 1585 Henri III had it restored and transformed by the addition of delicate decoration and the sculptures by the celebrated renaissance sculptor Germain Pilon. The two figures on either side of the clock represent the force of law and justice. A hundred years later in 1685 during the reign of Louis XIV “The Sun King” the dial plate was changed. A more recent restoration and cleaning was completed in 2012, vividly revealing the clock in its true splendour once again.
