Whitewashed thatched cottage with veranda, Paternoster, Western Cape, South Africa

The vernacular architecture of the Atlantic west coast of South Africa is low whitewashed houses with a thatch roof in the style of the traditional fishermans cottage. Gardens are walled to keep out animals and blown sand. The veranda is used for shade and for outdoor eating, and food is often cooked on a braai (barbecue). Land and property in Paternoster village has become prime real estate for those wanting to escape big city life, and for weekenders from Cape Town (it is an hour and a half away by car). The village is becoming well known for good food with a number of quality restaurants and guesthouses serving a high level of cuisine. Fresh seafood is widely eaten, and the local speciality is crayfish (rock lobster) in season.
