Arctic bell-heather (Cassiope tetragona) plants. These plants are found at high altitude in the mountainous regions of the Arctic. During the winter they are covered by snow, which protects them from dessicating winds and from damage caused by repeated freezing and thawing. The leaves of Arctic bell-heather contain high levels of resin and burn well when dry. They are therefore an important source of fuel for Inuit Eskimos. Photographed on Clavering Island in North East Greenland National Park, Greenland.
