The Chenango river, one of its principal branches, flowssoutherly through the centre of the county. The Unadilla riverforms most of the eastern bounds of the county. The numerousstreams in this county furnish abundance of fine mill sites. TheChenango canal passes through the county in the valley of the Che-nango river. This county was principally settled by emigrants fromthe eastern states. It originally included the twenty townships of CHENANGO COUNTY. n the Governors purchase, a part of which are now in Madisoncounty. The county is divided into 19 towns, viz. : Otselic,Oxford,Pliarsaha, Bainbridgo, Columbus, CovciUry, Gcnnan, Greene, Guilford, Liiicklcan, Macdoiiough, New-Berlin, Norwich, Pilchcr,Plymouth, Preston,Shcrbourne,Stnithville,Smyrna. Norwich village, the county seat, is delightfully situated upon theChenango river, 110 miles from Albany. lis site is much admired bytravellers. It is surrounded by lands in a high stale of cultivation,. Courthouse and other buildings in Noiiuich. and well supplied with pure and wholesome water. There is a min-eral spring near the village, resorted to for cutaneous diseases. Theabove view shows the courthouse in the centre of the engraving ; thebuilding with a spire on the left, is the Presbyterian church. Thecourthouse has been but recently erected. It is built of freestone, andis one of the most splendid structures of the kind in the state. Be-sides the above, there are in the village 1 Episcopal, 1 Baptist, and 1Methodist church, 2 weekly newspaper offices, the Chenango Bank,several manufactories, and about 200 dwellings.
