Tonsillectomy instrument, close-up. This device is English and dates from about 1850. Originally invented in 1828 by Philip Physick this type of instrument was used up until the mid 1900s. The tonsils are two soft lumps of tissue situated at either side of the back of the throat. They are part of the immune system but may become inflamed repeatedly. The end ring of the instrument is placed over the tonsil, which is pierced by the retractable spikes. The spikes are used to lift the tissue which is then sliced off with the circular blade.
