The decorations of a specifically military character are the twolions heads behind his shoulders, and the five large medallions on his breast, known asphalerae. Upon the central one of the phalerae is a head of Medusa; on the others,heads crowned with ivy, and a lions head. All these decorations are fastened by strapsto his cuirass, or lorica.
