Following this trail a fewyards, I found the bear lying dead against the trunk ofa sapling. A sort of bellow he had uttered as I wasdescending the cliff had evidently been his death-cry. He was a fine, fat, black bear, not too old, and hiscoat for the fall was unusually fine. When we came toexamine him closely, we found that two bullets hadstruck him. One had hit his left thigh, tearing themuscles badly and shattering the bone. The other hadpenetrated his left front leg, had passed out under thearmpit, had entered the body, and had passed out onthe other side.
