Landing the Crew in Breeches Buoy
Rescue of a shipwreck survivor connected by line to the seashore with a Breeches Buoy, also called a Bosun's Chair Wrecks were commonplace with a great loss of life as the largest number of shipwrecks occurred when driven ashore unplanned. The Breeches Buoy, based on the 1807 life-mortar invention of the English Captain George Manby (1765-1854), consisted of a lifebuoy running on a hawser suspended from a line which has canvas breeches for the user's legs. It was later developed in 1821 by Henry Tengrouse, followed in 1832 by John Dennett's invention having a range of 250 yards.
