In the upper extremity the flexors predominate to draw the digitsinto the palm of the hand, to flex the wrist, to pronate the forearm, and to fix the elbow at an angle. The extremity is usually held closeto the chest. In these vicious positions the joints become practicallysoldered. After the case is somewhat chronic, if the fingers or wristare extended, they fairly snap back to their flexed positions, and thetightly clenched fingers may cause trophic lesions in the palm. In casesof long standing, probably both from the enforced inactivity and trophicdisturbance, the range of joint movements is considerably limited irre-spective of the muscular contracture, and sometimes this appears
