A better approxmiation of theOrder has been made by BrowTi, who points out a relation to^ Biithworts ; as towhich the structure of the wood in some respects confirms his views. Like maiiy inthat Order, it is zoneless, although plainly exogenous ; but it has this m particular tocharacterise it, that the system of spiral vessels is developed in a degree unknown inany other plants. EndUcher adopts the same \iew as does A. Brongmart; and l Fig. CXCIX.—Nepenthes distiUatoria. 1. ^ ; 2. ^ ; 3. ripe fruit; 4. a section of a seed very CXCIX 288 NEPENTHACEiE. [Diclinous Exogens. have formerly coincided with those Botanists. But the adherent ovary of Birth-worts, their highly developed calyx, axile placentation, and hermaphrodite flowers, are serious difficulties in the way of a close contact between them and Nepenths, unless the peculiar structure of the wood, the consideration of which I for thepresent abandon, should lead to the final establishment of the Class of Homogens,in which case Nepenths and Bii-thworts will be brought mto contact, or at leasta near neighbom-hood. For the present, the true position of this Order must be re-garded as an undetermined point. In the meanwhile it may be observed, that tostation it in the Euphorbial AlUance will be to \iolate as few affinities as by taking anyother comse. Its points of agieements are its unisexual flowers, albuminous seeds, m-complete floral envelop
