The Northern Pacific, carrying 2,582 returning soldiers, caught fire and stranded on Fire Island sand bar near Honelyville, The soldiers were safely evacuated using various means, including surf boats and naval launches. Fortunately, no casualties occurred. The image shows the stranded vessel about 200 yards off the beach in 11 feet of sand.
