In August 1914 he joined the4th Seaforth Highlanders as a Private and servedwith them in France from November 1914 toJune 1916, when he was sent to Gailes CadetCamp. He was commissioned in November1916, returned to France and served till he fellin action at Wytschaete, Belgium, on 16 April1918.
