The high vaultsand prominent teeth, and upper alveolar process due to this THE HEAD, FACE, JAWS AND TEETH 91 cause, are nicely illustrated in Fig. 18, etc. On the otherhand, we occasionally notice the jaws brought closelytogether. This is due (1) to a short ramus; (2) to rightangles of the rami to the body of the jaw; (3) to arrest ofdevelopment of the alveolar process, and, (4) to teeth withshort crowns, or teeth not fully erupted. In such cases thevault is low, the alveolar process thick, and usually the lowerjaw is quite broad. The lips pout, the face is short andbroad. Frequently the upper jaw is arrested in its develop-ment; the muscles of mastication are very set and a case is illustrated in Fig. 19. The height of the vault, then, is not due to the roofs. Fig. 1*1. being pushed or pulled up by a pressure exerted through thevomer by the development of the sphenoid bone, nor doesthe shape of the base of the skull in any wa}^ affect it, as Ihave already explained. The height is due entirely to agrowth downward of the alveolar process and teeth. Theextent of the development of the alveolar process dependsupon Natures becoming satisfied with her architecturalfigures, and harmonizing the jaws, alveolar process, andlength of teeth. That the distance in height is chano-ed froma child to a person of middle life is demonstrated by the fol-lowing figures: Thus in 317 children, under five years ofage, before the development of the first permanent molar and 92 ETIOLOGY OF OSSEOU8 DEFORMITIES OF alveolar process, the lowest vault measured .17; the , with an average of .42. If, now, we notice the height ofvaults in children at different ages, we find a gradual advancein
