Vol. 41 Toronto, August 15, 1921 No. 16 Revival of Trade Urgently Needed To use a colloqual expression, "passing the buck" seems to be a popular pastime in the present state of comparative quietude in the building line. One organization or trade is blaming the other for the lull in structural activity. Some declare lumber is the cause of per- sons not going on with contemplated constructions, while others pro- claim that it is the agitation of labor, the high wages of workmen, the price of brick, cement, plumbing, etc. Others declare the fault is to be laid at the door of the banks and loan companies, and not a few allege that greedy, grasping landlords are a menace in the present stagnation. Thus the lumberman blames the contractor and the con- tractor chides the raw material man and the raw material man reproaches labor and labor reprehends the loan companies. The tenant censures the landlord and the latter arraigns the real estate man, the manufacturer the wholesaler or the money loaner. There is a painful lack of co-operation and confidence, and a spirit of recrimin
