Lithuania, Siauliai: the Hill of Crosses. The Hill of Crosses, a pilgrimage site, symbol of Lithuanian defiance of foreign invaders, with over crosses and statues dug in the ground. The first crosses were left on the Hill by the relatives of rebels killed in the end of the XIXth century, then in the 1950s in memory of the Lithuanian deportees. The Soviet government tried to demolish the site but the Lithuanian people kept on adding new crosses, crucifix and statues. This place is now a pilgrimage and tourist site
