Slave Trade, (West African slave market on the coast of Sierra Leone), print by Currier & Ives after Auguste Francois Biard, after 1863
Even after the Atlantic slave trade was outlawed in 1808 some slave traders still bought slaves in Africa illegally and transported them to places where slavery was permitted. Based on a painting by Auguste-Francois Biard, a French artist from 1840, and a subsequent print by British engraver CE Wagstaff, this coloured print shows a West African slave market on the coast of Sierra Leone
