Amsterdam Montelbaanstoren on the corner of the canals Oude Waal and Oudeschans. Built in 1516. Bell tower added in 1606.

The Montelbaanstoren is a tower on the corner of the canals Oude Waal and Oudeschans in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The original tower was built in 1516 for the purpose of defending the city. By the seventeenth century it was being used as a warehouse. In 1606 the building was topped with an ornamental steeple in Renaissance style to a design by Hendrick de Keyser, and a clock and a peal of bells were installed in the tower. Four years later the tower started to list and had to be pulled upright with cables. The foundations, which originally consisted of cut peat, were reinforced with a circle of bricks.
