Beingmade superintendentof the business in1859, he was admit-ted to partnership iii the firm, which was then, upon the retirement of , changed to Campbell, Whittier & Co. In1874 the business was incorporated under the name ofthe Whittier Machine Company, with Mr. Whittier aspresident, a position which he has since held. Theworks, for many years in Roxbury, but located nowmainlv in South Boston, comprise a very large andunusually fine plant in the line of foundry and machinework, especially adapted to the manufacture of CHARLES WHiTTItR hydraulic and electric passenger and freight companv is one of the principal manufacturers in.■\merica of electric elevators, which represent the highestdevelopment thus far attained by electrical science andmechanical art in this industry. A large number ofimprovements, increasing the safety, speed and comfortrealized in the use of elevators, have been introduced bythe \\hittier Machine Company. These improvementsare protected by numerous patents, many of which are Mr. Whittiers owninventions. Thecompany has alwaysencouraged legisla-tion calculated to se-cure the compulsoryadoption of all rea-sonable safeguardsfor the protection oflife and limb in theuse of elevators, in-cluding a rigid sys-tem of Whittier has al-ways been identifiedwith the Republicanparty.
