Head and eye of the Uffington White Horse chalk figure carved on the hillside above the flat-topped mound (Dragon Hill) where St George is said to have slain the dragon. Once thought to be an Iron Age tribal symbol (of the goddess Epona?), or more recent memorial, the carving has been archaeologically dated to the Bronze Age: optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dates 1384-550BC. The hollow to the left, The Manger or Ring Pit, is said to have inspired Tolkien. There is a crude crop circle in the field behind the mound. A walker pauses to admire the view.
