His first residence in Illinois wasat Payson in 1858, and later at 1860 he again returned to Wiscon-sin and from there went as a soldierin the 21st Vol. Inf. in 1862. He wasin a number of historic struggles,faced death and starvation and wasone of the 308, left of his regiment of1012, at the close of the war. Hefought at Perryville, saw the triumphs of Lookout Mountain and Mission-ary Ridge; he was at the siege of Atlanta, and went with Sherman to thesea. He was
