The vale of the Avoca widens gradually in its approach to Arklow : betweenthe mines and the latter, on the east of the river the continuous woods of Bally-arthur and Shelton rival in beauty the range of woods terminating in Glenarton the opposite side. The town of Arklow, and its old ruined castle standingon an eminence over the Avoca, which, after beautifying so much gloriousscenery, discharges itself through a bridge of nineteen arches, have a grand andimposing appearance; while an extensive sea view terminates the prospect.
