The Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso de Alcalá de Henares was founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros as the origin of the historic University of Alcalá.1​2​3​4​5​ It was closed as a hall of residence in September ​ It is currently the rectory of the new University of Alcalá. The works of the Paraninfo, today famous worldwide for being, annually, the place where the Cervantes Prize is awarded, began in 1516. Gutiérrez de Cárdenas and Pedro de Villarroel were the ones who made the plasterwork, and the carpentry was carried out by Andrés de Zamora, Bartolomé Aguilar , Pedro Izquierdo and Hernando de Sahagún. The façade is undoubtedly the best known and most beautiful work by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón and was begun in 1537 and completed in 1553. It is made of limestone from Tamajón.
