The Thames Flood Barrier, Woolwich, London, photographed from the control tower on the south bank of the River Thames, looking north. Officially opened in 1984, the project took 8 years to complete and cost nearly #500 million. The barrier consists of 10 moveable D-shaped gates (the black, semi- circular structures visible above the water line) supported by 9 concrete piers, each containing the hydraulic machinery which lifts the gates into position. When not in use the gates rest in concrete sills on the bed of the river, causing no hindrance to river traffic.
