This method is difficult to manage for if the leastfold occurs, the piece is cut and irretrievably spoiled. Fig. 81, p. 225. Passage between 3rd and4th bowls then batched in the 5 th. By this methodnot only a glaze is obtained but also a wateryeffect imitating the mangle finish and which iscalled »moire«, but it is not the real »moire« aswe shall see further on. Certain kinds of calenders called water-manglesare used for squeezing-out the water from thegoods after bleaching or dyeing. They are somewhatdifferently constructed from the others and requireto be well made with strong framing on accountof the heavy pressure they have to bear. Themiddle bowl is usually of brass and the othersof very hard wood, generally sycamore, they have3 or 5 bowls.
