Josiah Henson, 1789 – 1883. Author, abolitionist, and minister. Born into slavery he escaped to Upper Canada (now Ontario) in 1830, and founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves. He is believed to have inspired the title character of the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. From America Revisited: From The Bay of New York to The Gulf of Mexico, published 1886.
