Telescopes at La Silla. Buildings housing the metre telescope (white dome) and the New Technology Telescope (NTT, grey) at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) site at La Silla, Chile. The telescope has a CAT auxiliary telescope in the tower beside it. The NTT has tested the concepts which are to be used for the Very Large Telescope at Cerro Paranal, Chile. These two telescopes are the largest optical devices at La Silla. The high altitude of La Silla (2400 metres), and the clear air above it, make the site an ideal location for astronomical observations because atmospheric distortions to incoming light are reduced.
