dead fish skeleton, Salton Sea, California, USA,

Salton Sea, California, USA, December 18 2013, You cant ignore the issue of Salinity in the Salton Sea. Many visitors mention the dead fish and bad smell. December wasn't too bad. Little in the way of smell, but still carcasses scattered akong the beach. As per Wilkipedia - Due to the high salinity, very few fish species can tolerate living in the Salton Sea. The Tilapia is virtually the only fish that can tolerate the high salinity levels. The lack of an outflow means that the Salton Sea is a system of accelerated change. Variations in agricultural runoff cause fluctuations in water level (and flooding of surrounding communities in the 1950s and 1960s), and the relatively high salinity of the inflow feeding the Sea has resulted in ever increasing salinity. By the 1960s it was apparent that the salinity of the Salton Sea was rising, jeopardizing some of the species in it. The Salton Sea has a salinity exceeding w/v (saltier than seawater) and many species of fish can no longer survive. It is believed that once the salinity surpasses w/v, only the tilapia will survive. Fertilizer runoffs combined with the increasing salinity have resulted in large algal blooms and elevated bacteria levels.[14] A freshwater fish notable for its ability to withstand the rising salinity of the Salton Sea is the Desert pupfish, which can survive salinities ranging from to This guy is not one of the luckier ones.
