The Departure of John and Sebastian Cabot from Bristol on their first voyage of discovery, 1497. By Ernest Board (1877-1934). John Cabot (c1450-c1499) was an Italian navigator and explorer. In Board's painting we see Cabot leaving on his 1497 voyage which saw him become the first European to encounter the mainland of North America since the Norse Vikings in the 11th century.
