Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Blisters around the lips of a patient with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), also called erythema multiforme major. SJS is a serious reaction of the immune system to drugs or viral infection. Lesions erupt on the skin and mucous membranes. These are treated as burns, with saline compresses for skin lesions and mouthwashes for oral lesions. Lost fluids must be replaced. Local anaesthetics are used to treat the skin pain. SJS requires hospital care, as severe cases of the gastrointestinal or respiratory membranes may be fatal.
