Sow seed about 45 days in advance of time wanted to transplant in open. Early varieties may be sown outside in March and April. For Winter Cabbage, sow seed in June, Juiy or August. Keep crop well wat- ered and cultivated, for when growth is checked, seed head matures and bursts forth as soon as moisture is ag-ain applied. Cabbage requires heavy soil with g-ood drainagre and frequent but shallow cultivation. However, g-ood crops can be obtained on lighter soil if well fertilized. Root plants deeply when setting- them to resist drouth. 14 lb. of seed will produce ap- proximately 20,000 plants, enough to plant an acre.
