The temperatureof the water in the crater, a few minutes before an eruption, is 200° F., andthat of the pools, just after, 170° F. The theoretical boiling point here is199°, and the temperature above the boiling point is probably caused bythe heating of the water during the escape of the superheated steam fromfar down in the tube of the geyser. Old Faithful is sometimes degraded bybeing made a laundry. Garments placed in the crater during quiescenceare ejected thoroughly washed when the eruption takes place. Gen. Sheri-dans men, in 1882, found that linen and cotton fabrics were uninjured bythe action of the water, but woolen clothes were torn to shreds. The Bee Hive.—This geyser is situated about 100 feet from the rightbank of the river, near the foot-bridge. It is easily distinguished by itscone, from the resemblance of which to an old-fashioned straw bee hive itwas named by the Washburn party in 1870. The crater is three feet in. THE GIANTESS. 47 height, and almost circular, measuring three by four feet on top, and havinga circumference of twenty feet at the base. It i3 beautifully coated withbeaded silica. There is no surrounding terraced deposit, as there is aboutmost of the craters. This is probably due to the fact that very little waterfalls around it. The orifice on the summit of the cone measures two feet bythree feet, and a line dropped into the tube reaches a depth of twenty-onefeet. Just outside of the cone are several vents or steam-holes, one of whichacts as a sort of preliminary vent or signal for the eruption of the eruption of the Bee Hive is very tine and peculiar to itself, no other gey-ser in
