A Thai long-tailed boat moored in Loh Lana Bay on Phi Phi island.

Throughout Thailand, on both sea and river, the long tailed boat is a favoured form of transport. They are a popular way of transporting and ferrying tourists around. The boats are named long tailed because of the curious engine and propulsion method. A large powerful engine is sited outboard on the rear of the boat. It is powered through the water by a propellor on the end of a very long drive shaft - hence the name long tailed. The boats move quite fast through the water and create a considerable wake.
