The museum was founded in 1932 by two enthusiasts and pioneers of Italian motoring, Cesare Goria Gatti and Roberto Biscaretti di Ruffia. Considered one of the oldest automobile museums, it acquired a new face with its futuristic renovation in 2011, earning it a nomination in The Times publication as one of the 50 best museums in the world. It is spread over 3 floors exhibiting over 200 cars and 80 different car makes. It provides an emotional journey tracing the history of the automobile, from its invention, from the first prototype by Leonardo Da Vinci, all the way to the latest generation Formula One car. The museum has plenty of exhibition spaces where temporary exhibits are held. There is also the Open Garage, a vault of cars ready to be shown or under restoration
