Early computer. Console of the Atlas 1 computer, a pioneering design built in 1964 by ICL (formerly Ferranti). This console was mainly used to provide information on the operation of the machine. The console gave a summary of how the computer was performing and what types of jobs were running on it. The console was also used to diagnose faults by assessing which type of instruction was being executed when the machine broke down. The computer was installed at the Atlas Computer Laboratory (part of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory), Britain. It was mainly used for particle physics research.
