February, Sunday 10, 2013 – Rungsted Rowing Club, Denmark. Male rower taking part in the old Danish Shrovetide custom to beat out the cat of the barrel. It combines old Christian beliefs and heathen rituals - originally done by placing a live cat in a barrel. Nowadays, with cardboard cats and an opportunity for children and grownups to dress up and celebrate transition from winter to spring and compete to become the Shrovetide Queen or King (bottom of barrel or last barrel stave). Then buns, cocoa, and candy. The tradition is carried out in communities, schools, sports clubs, etc.
