Synthetic DNA. A researcher holds a column containing synthetic DNA (DeoxyriboNucleic Acid) fragments. The white area visible within the column contains a special matrix to which the synthetic DNA \sticks\" for storage. Short fragments of high purity DNA of known sequence can be synthesised by programmable machines known as automated synthesisers. Such DNA fragments are known as oligonucleotides. Synthetic DNA is an important tool used in the genetic investigation of DNA during cloning or sequencing experiments. Once synthesised, oligonucleotides are dispensed into columns such as the one seen."
